Liz Shen's grandfather Shen Jia'en commanded the 93rd Division of the Chinese National Revolutionary Army. After the 1949 Civil War, remnants of the division resettled in Thailand's Golden Triangle, earning citizenship by helping fight communist insurgency. Liz's father started the 93 Army Coffee Plantation in Pha Tang, Chiang Rai in 2009, growing Catimor hybrids at 1,200 to 1,600 metres.
Liz roasts the harvest using honey process and is founding Thailand's International Women's Coffee Alliance chapter. The Bangkok cafe opened October 2014 under the motto 'We Make Coffee Not War,' with polished concrete floors, a natural wood slat counter, and coral pink trim along the ceiling.
